Bhopal bans begging, warns of legal action against beggars and almsgivers

Authorities in Madhya Pradesh’s capital, Bhopal, have officially banned begging and warned of strict legal action against both beggars and those offering alms. The move follows a similar prohibition enforced in Indore last year.

The Bhopal district administration has banned begging across the city, citing concerns over criminal activities, drug addiction among beggars, and traffic safety risks at signals.

  • Bhopal Collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh issued the order under Section 163(2) of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita on Monday.
  • The order prohibits both begging and offering alms, making violators liable for legal action.
  • Beggars found on the streets will be moved to a designated shelter home at the Community Health Centre in Kolar.

Authorities noted that several beggars have been involved in crimes and drug abuse, prompting the need for a crackdown. Similar measures were enforced in Indore in 2023, where begging was banned, and citizens were prohibited from giving alms.
