Veteran BJP leader Debendra Pradhan passes away at 84

Debendra Pradhan, former Union minister and a key architect of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha during the 1980s, passed away on Monday at the age of 84.

Pradhan breathed his last at the official residence of his son, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, in New Delhi after a brief illness, as confirmed by family sources.

Born on July 16, 1941, in Talcher, which was then a part of the undivided Dhenkanal district, Pradhan pursued a medical career after obtaining his MBBS degree from SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, in 1966.

He worked as a medical officer until 1973 when he resigned from the government service to engage in social work as a doctor.

His political journey took a decisive turn when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980, driven by the party's ideology. At a time when the Congress party dominated Odisha's political landscape, Pradhan's commitment saw him quickly rise through the ranks.

He became the president of the BJP's Talcher mandal and later the Dhenkanal district president within three years of joining.

Pradhan's influence in the party grew as he became the president of the Odisha BJP unit in 1988. He was re-elected to the position in 1990 and again in 1995. By 1997, he had risen to the party's national executive level.

His parliamentary career began with his election to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 from the now-defunct Deogarh constituency, a seat he successfully retained in 1999. During his first term, he served as the Minister of State for Surface Transport in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and later as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture in his second term.

In 2001, Pradhan's stature within the BJP was further solidified with his appointment as the party's national vice-president.

Debendra Pradhan's passing marks the end of an era for the BJP in Odisha, with his contributions leaving an indelible mark on the party's history in the state.
