Delhi: cop dies while trying to stop theft, CM announces compensation for kin

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday announced an ex-gratia of Rs one crore for the family of Delhi Police assistant sub inspector Shambhu Dayal, who died after being stabbed by a snatcher.

57-year-old Dayal was stabbed multiple times on January 4, according to CCTV footage. A man who was caught stealing a mobile phone stabbed Dayal as onlookers did nothing to stop the attack.

Paying tribute to Dayal in a tweet, Kejriwal said, 'While protecting the public, ASI Shambhu ji did not even care about his life. He became a martyr. We are proud of him. His life cannot be reduced to a number, but in his honor, we will give an honorarium of one crore rupees to his family.'

The Delhi Police too paid homage to the policeman for not letting the thief escape. Dayal died while receiving treatment in BLK hospital.

The CCTV footage shows Dayal walking with the alleged robber who he had just nabbed from the Mayapuri slums in West Delhi.

Dayal had caught him after a woman complained that the robber had stolen her husband's phone and threatened them.

In the video, when Dayal arrives at the scene, the woman points toward the thief on whom the stolen phone was reportedly found.

While the thief was being taken to the police station, he produced a knife hidden in his clothes and stabbed the cop in the back.

In the purported CCTV video, Shambhu Dayal is seen being stabbed on his neck, chest and stomach by the robber as a crowd watched from a safe distance. Dayal fought back, pushing the thief away who took off. The crowd chased the thief but eventually he was caught by another policeman and arrested.

Wounded Dayal, keeling over in pain, was taken to hospital.
