Forces 'opened fire blankly', say Nagaland Police. Here's how Army op went so wrong

The 21 Para Special forces of Army "blankly opened fire" resulting in the killing of many villagers in the Mon district of Nagaland near Assam border, the state police have alleged in its FIR against the Army unit.

The FIR has further alleged that the "intention" of security forces was to "murder and injure civilians".

The Police have also said that the classified operation was conducted without the knowledge of the police or Assam Rifles.

Thirteen villagers and a soldier were killed at an Indo-Myanmar border district in Nagaland on Sunday as a counter-insurgency operation went horribly wrong. One more villager died in the clashes that followed.

So how did the Army operation go so wrong:

According to reports, the Special Forces were tipped off by the intelligence agencies about the movement of some militants of NSCN and ULFA in the area.

Special Forces deployed different teams for surveillance and ambush after the input.

The Mon area is the bastion of Naga group NSCN(K) and Assam's ULFA as well.

At around 4 pm on Sunday, the army team, led by a Major, identified a pick-up truck on the Tiru-Oting road as a target and opened fire.

Reports said that eight local coal miners were travelling in the truck. Six died on the spot and two later in the hospital.

As the Special Forces were waiting for the police to arrive, they were surrounded by angry locals.

Forces fired on the locals and this led to the death of 7 more locals. A commando was also killed after being attacked by the angry locals.
