After Russia's Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping, Spain's President Pedro Sanchez has cancelled his plan to visit India for the G20 summit.

Unlike the other two, Sanchez was forced to cancel his trip after he tested positive for Covid-19 infection.

Sanchez on September 7 said that he was feeling fine, but Spain's First Vice President Nadia Calvino Santamaria and Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares would attend the G20 summit.

“This afternoon I have tested positive for COVID and will not be able to travel to New Delhi for the G20 Summit,” the Spanish leader said in social media post.

He added that “Spain will be magnificently represented by the First Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation,”

Several world leaders will be converging in India’s New Delhi on September 9-10 for the crucial G20 summit. Leaders who have confirmed their presence include US President Joe Biden, UK PM Rishi Sunak and Australia PM Anthony Albanese among many others.

While Chinese and Russian leaders would not travel for the summit, they assured presence of their representatives. Moscow will deploy Foreign Minister Sergey Lavror and Beijing will send Premier Li Qiang.

Xi Jinping has not given clarity over a possible virtual address. Putin, however, does not have plans to attend remotely.
