Hyderabad: 40-yr-old Kuwait returnee with monkeypox-like symptoms hospitalised

A 40-year-old resident of Telangana’s Kamareddy district was admitted to the Government Fever Hospital in Hyderabad after he showed symptoms of monkeypox.

The patient who has a travel history to Kuwait was admitted to the health facility's isolation ward.

He returned to India on July 6 and developed symptoms around July 23. On Monday, he went to a private hospital which referred him to Kamareddy district government hospital from where he was shifted to the government fever hospital. While his test results are awaited, health officials have traced six of his contacts and kept them under observation.

India has so far reported four monkeypox cases, one in Delhi and three in Kerala.
The World Health Organisation on Saturday declared Monkeypox as a public health emergency of international concern, describing it as an extraordinary situation considering the outbreak across more than 75 countries.

According to the WHO, monkeypox spreads from person to person through close contact with someone who has a monkeypox rash. Contact with bodily fluids, lesions on the skin or mucosal surfaces, respiratory droplets and contaminated objects including a patient’s clothes or bed sheets can cause a spread of the virus.

The symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, swollen lymph nodes and a skin rash or lesions on the face, palms of the hands, soles of the feet, mouth, genitals, perianal area or eyes.

The total number of confirmed cases of monkeypox across the world has crossed 15,600 with maximum cases reported in France, Germany, Spain, UK and USA, reported Reuters.
