India-China Tawang clash: United Nations Secretary General speaks on fresh tension

Following revelation of a fresh border fight between troops of India and China, the United Nations Secretary General called for de-escalation of tension.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres' spokesperson said that they had seen the reports of the clash, and appealed that tensions in the area "do not grow".

On December 9, Chinese soldiers attempted to transgress into the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control, leading to a physical altercation with Indian soldiers. The Chinese troops were forced to return to their posts, Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh said on 13 December 2022.

It was the first major clash between the Indian and Chinese armies since the fierce face-off in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades.

This is also the first major incident at the border after Chinese President Xi Jinping was re-elected for an unprecedented third five-year term at the twice-a-decade Congress of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC).
