Heavy rain triggers landslide in Jammu and Kashmir, schools closed

Several houses were damaged, and landslides were reported in several areas of Jammu and Kashmir as incessant rainfall for the past 48 hours continued to wreak havoc on April 30. In Kupwara, flash floods swept away several houses and left roads inundated. In the Sarbal area of Sonamarg, an avalanche was reported on April 29. Luckily, no casualties were recorded.

Meanwhile, schools were ordered shut across the Kashmir region on April 30 as the weather officials predicted more rain.

"In view of inclement weather and an avalanche warning issued by the Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority (JKSDMA), class work in all schools across the district is suspended on 29-4-2024 as a precautionary measure for the safety of students," an official was quoted as saying by PTI.

The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed for traffic on Monday due to landslides at multiple places along the highway.

According to local reports, several water bodies across Kashmir are in spate following continuous rains. The meteorological centre in Srinagar said the wet weather conditions will likely continue on Tuesday.

“Weather will be generally cloudy with light to moderate rain with thunder at many places on Tuesday,” MeT director Mukhtar Ahmad said, according to Hindustan Times newspaper.

Amid heavy rainfall in parts of the district, Kupwara's Machil sector witnessed fresh snowfall.
