Lawyer-activist Sudha Bharadwaj released after 3 years in jail

Lawyer-activist Sudha Bharadwaj, one of the 16 people arrested in the Elgar Parishad case, walked out of jail on Thursday after spending over three years.

Bharadwaj was released from the Byculla women's prison after the NIA court set bail conditions on Wednesday. She is the first to be granted default bail in the case.

After being released, she was seen sporting a wide smile, the photo of which is being shared on social media.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the National Investigation Agency's plea to stay the default bail granted to her by the Bombay High Court on December 1.

Father Stan Swamy, also arrested under UAPA in the case, died in July while fighting for bail on health grounds.

Another accused in the case, political activist and poet Varavara Rao, was granted bail on medical grounds earlier this year.

Sudha Bharadwaj was arrested on August 28, 2018, and was later placed under house arrest. She was then taken into custody on October 27, 2018.

A number of activists are still languishing in jail in the Bhima Koregaon case.
