In an upsetting incident, an accidental grenade blast occurred along the disputed India-Pakistan border. The accidental explosion claimed the lives of two Indian Army soldiers - a captain and a junior commissioned officer.

The incident occurred along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district on 17 July. The victims were on duty in the Mendhar sector when the blast occurred late at night.

The two soldiers were airlifted to a hospital in Udhampur, but they succumbed to their injuries during treatment.

They were identified as Captain Anand, and JCO Naib Subedar Bhagwan Singh. Captain Anand hailed from Champa Nagar in Bihar's Bhagalpur, while Naib Subedar Bhagwan Singh belonged to Pokhar Bhitta village in Uttar Pradesh's Ambedkar Nagar.

Days earlier, the Indian Army was rocked by an incident of fratricide in the same area. On 15 July, a soldier had opened fire at his fellow troopers in Poonch. Two soldiers had died, while two had been injured in the incident. The attacker had shot himself in the stomach.
