Manipur CM reacts after PM Modi's comment in Independence Day speech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 briefly spoke about Manipur's 3-month-long spell of violence. Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi, Modi said, "In the last few weeks, there has been violence in the northeast - mainly Manipur - and other parts of the country. But especially Manipur.

"In Manipur, many people died, mothers and daughters were disrespected. But for some days now, there have been reports of peace prevailing. The country stands with Manipur," he added.

Following Modi's comments, the Chief Minister of Manipur issued an appeal to the people of his state.

N Biren Singh said, "I wish (everyone) a very happy Independence Day. I convey my message to all the people of the state to restore peace and normalcy. Everyone is requested to shun violence. End violence and live together peacefully like earlier."
