Vegetable vendor stripped and assaulted over ₹3,100 debt; video surfaces

A 35-year-old garlic vendor was allegedly stripped and assaulted in Noida over non-payment of a ₹3,100 loan.

A video of the incident, which was also shared by the Congress party, has gone viral on social media. The video shows a man beating the naked victim with a stick.

The victim had taken a loan of ₹5,600 from a commission agent and paid back ₹2,500.

“The victim, Amit, sells garlic on a cart in Sector 88, Noida sabzi mandi. He had taken a loan of ₹5,600 from Sundar, who is the commission agent (aadhti) in the mandi. On Monday, Amit returned ₹2,500 to Sundar and told him that he would soon return the remaining amount. But Sunder called his muneem (accountant) and two labourers and beat the man up brutally and locked him in a shop. They also stripped the victim, abused him, and threatened to kill him,” said a police officer.

Two persons, including the man accused Sundar Singh, have been arrested.
