Manipur-based militant groups claim responsibility for attack that killed colonel, his family

Two militant organisations claimed responsibility for the ambush on an Assam Rifles team, in which seven people including a commander and his family members were killed, in Manipur on Saturday.

In a joint statement, the People's Liberation Army and the Manipur Naga People's Front claimed that they had carried out the attack on the paramilitary force at Sehkan village in Churachandpur district that also killed 4 soldiers.

The groups said that the attack was to protect their people and that they were revolting against the attempts to suppress their rights.

The militants also claimed that they had not been aware of the army officer’s wife and son's presence in the convoy.

The Prime Minister condemned the attack on country's oldest paramilitary force and offered condolences to the families of the deceased.
