NCP leader arrested days after forcibly shutting down a movie screening

Days after forcibly shutting down the screening of a Marathi film alleging misrepresentation of Chhatrapati Shivaji, former Maharashtra minister Jitendra Awhad along with nine supporters has been arrested.

Police had lodged an FIR against Awhad on November 8 for allegedly provoking violence and intentionally breaching peace.

The NCP leader also reportedly beat up a moviegoer who protested against the stopping of the screening.

Awhad, in a tweet on Friday confirmed his arrest and also called it an abuse of power. It added that he will not plead guilty to what he did not do.

On November 7, the NCP leader along with his supporters barged into a multiplex in Thane to disrupt the the screening of Marathi movie 'Har Har Mahadev' alleging distortion of facts.

Awhad had demanded that such movies not be released in the state.

Reacting to Awhad's arrest, NCP leader Supriya Sule claimed that the summon was issued due to pressure from higher authorities.

Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis had warned action against people thrashing movie watchers.
