PM Modi-Biden meet: Rakesh Tikait's appeal to US Prez to 'focus' on farmers' issue

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait in a tweet appealed to US President Joe Biden to "focus" on the controversial farm laws passed by the Indian government when he meets PM Modi on Friday.

Tagging POTUS in his tweet, Tikait wrote at least 700 people have lost their lives during the protests in the last 11 months and that "these black laws should be repealed’ to save the farmers.

.Tikait, the spokesperson of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), once again sought to draw international attention to the farmers’ protest in India.

The farmers are demanding a repeal of the three farm laws which they feel will leave them at the mercy of big corporations. Instead, the farmers want a new law made to guarantee minimum support price (MSP) for crops. The government has however maintained that the laws are pro-farmer.

The protests gained global attention earlier this year when several American celebrities like singer Rihanna and Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg tweeted on the issue.
