Cheetah credit war: Congress tweets 2009 letter, calls PM Modi 'pathological liar'

A political war of words over the re-introduction of the cheetah in India continues. A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the event in which 8 cheetahs from Namibia were released at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress called him a "pathological liar".

The Congress reacted to a statement by the Prime Minister that previous governments did not make constructive efforts to re-introduce the wild cat which went extinct in India in 1952.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on 18 September 2022 tweeted a photograph of a government document dated 6 October 2009. Ramesh claimed that this letter had launched Project Cheetah in 2009.

In the letter, Jairam Ramesh, who was then Union environment minister, asked the Wildlife Trust of India to prepare a detailed roadmap for bringing the cheetah back to India.
