Dalit student death: Congress red-faced as Rajasthan MLA quits claiming 'no justice' in letter to CM

The Congress government in Rajasthan was left red-faced after party MLA Pana Chand Meghwal reportedly tendered his resignation over atrocities against Dalits. Meghwal cited that case of a 9-year-old Dalit boy who died after allegedly being thrashed by a teacher at school for touching a drinking water pot.

Meghwal said that he had no right to remain in a legislator if he could not protect the rights of the Dalit community and ensure justice. The Congress politician accused the state machinery of stalling the judicial process when it comes to atrocities against oppressed groups.

The MLA's letter handed ammunition to the Opposition BJP, which attacked Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, and claimed that crime was rising in the state.

The Congress countered by saying that the accused teacher had been arrested, the CM had condemned the Jalore incident, and crimes appear to be rising only because all incidents are being recorded, and not hidden.
