Kolkata: crude bombs hurled outside polling booth during civic polls

Sporadic incidents of violence were reported during the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections as few people were injured after crude bombs were hurled outside polling centres on Sunday.

Two incidents of hurling of crude bombs were reported in Sealdah and Khanna areas of Kolkata, and police contingents were rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control, a State Election Commission official said.

Police said that 72 people have been arrested so far for disturbing law and order during polling.

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said that if any ruling party leader is found to be involved in violence during the polls, strict action will be taken "within 24 hours".

The BJP and the CPI (M) alleged that the TMC has forcibly stopped opposition booth agents from entering polling centres in several wards, a charge that the ruling party termed "baseless".

In what can be called a rare sight, BJP, Left and the Congress protested together against the TMC outside a police station.
