Navjot Singh Sidhu has resigned as Punjab Congress chief. The development comes days after Sidhu's close aide Charajit Singh Channi was sworn in as the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab.

Sidhu was made the state party chief in July this year amid strong opposition from the then CM and veteran Congress leader, Amarinder Singh.

Sidhu in his resignation letter wrote that he can can 'never compromise on Punjab's future and the agenda for the state's welfare and therefore he is resigning as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

He however said he will 'continue to serve the Congress'.

Another minister, Razia Sultana have also resigned in support of Sidhu.

The Congress party in the state is plagued by infighting ahead of the state assembly polls in 2022.
