Relief for Congress as I-T won't recover dues during polls

In a big relief for Congress ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Income Tax Department told the Supreme Court on Monday that it will not recover dues from the opposition party during polls.

The Centre gave an undertaking before a bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih that no coercive action will be taken against the Indian National Congress (INC) to recover tax dues till July 2024. The Congress faces an income tax demand amounting to Rs 3500 crore.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Union Government, told the court that the I-T Department would defer any coercive steps considering the impending elections.

The matter will be heard next on July 24.
