Salman Rushdie attack: Indian govt finally reacts, condemns 'horrific attack', slams 'extremism'

Almost two weeks after author Salman Rushdie was attacked, the Indian government reacted to the incident. Rushdie, who was born in India's Mumbai in 1947, was attacked with a knife by a man in USA's New York on 12 August 2022.

On 25 August, Indian government spokesperson said, "India has always stood against violence and extremism. We condemn the horrific attack on Salman Rushdie and we wish him a speedy recovery."

The attack on Salman Rushdie had sparked a fresh debate on religious sensitivity and freedom of speech. Rushdie spent many years in hiding after his book 'The Satanic Verses' was labelled blasphemous against Islamic religious figure Mohammad, who is considered a Prophet by Muslims.

Iran's religious leader Ruholla Khomeini had issued a 'fatwa' in 1989 calling for Rushdie's murder. India had also banned Rushdie's book when the controversy broke out.
