Setback for Rahul Gandhi: Surat court says 'no' to putting conviction on hold

Nearly a month after he was sentenced to 2 years in jail, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi suffered another setback on April 20, 2023.

A court in Surat, Gujarat rejected Gandhi's application for putting on hold his conviction in a defamation case.

The conviction led to Gandhi's expulsion from Parliament. If the court had put a stay on the conviction, the Congress leader may have been able to return to the Lok Sabha.

Gandhi was convicted for linking the Modi surname to thievery.
