Siachen glacier, world’s highest battleground, gets increased mobile connectivity

The first-ever mobile tower has been installed at Siachen Glacier, which is the highest battlefield and disputed territory between India and Pakistan. The new tower will provide mobile services to Indian Army officials stationed at an altitude of 15,500 feet.

A base transceiver station has also been set up and will convert radio frequencies to digital signals.

“Siachen Warriors in collaboration with BSNL established first ever BSNL BTS at forward posts of the highest battlefield on 06 October to extend mobile communication for the soldiers deployed at more than 15,500 feet,” Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps wrote in a post.

The mobile tower’s installation was hailed by social media users. Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra said the development was “as important as the Vikram Lander.”

“It means our Jawans who put their lives on the line every single day on the world’s highest battlefield to defend us are now strongly connected to their families,” he wrote.
