A 24-year-old techie from Tamil Nadu was burnt alive by a classmate who underwent sex change surgery in a bid to marry her.

A 24-year-old software engineer in Tamil Nadu was chained, slashed with a blade and burnt alive by her former classmate who underwent sex change operation to marry her, the local police reported.

This incident took place in Thalambur near Kelambakkam, a southern suburb of Chennai. Police reported that the 26-year-old Vetrimaran whose name earlier was Pandi Maheswari, called the 24-year-old for a birthday surprise and then blindfolded her.

After this, the 24-year-old was allegedly chained and burnt alive. The victim was a native of Madurai and a software engineer. She had been living with her relative in Chennai.

Tambaram Police Commissioner Amalraj told NDTV, "They were friends and were living together in Chennai. No indication yet of any sexual assault. Whether Vetrimaran had displayed violent tendencies earlier is not clear. An investigation is on."

Police also said that the victim and Vetrimaran studied together in Madurai. The woman continued her friendship with Vetrimaran even after the sex change operation.

The local residents discovered Nandhini, still chained and burning. They immediately rushed her to the hospital, where she died.

Police were quick enough to apprehend Vetrimaran, who faces charges of murder.
