TMC MP targets Modi for not being allowed to take oath on Matua sect guru's name

TMC's Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Thakur targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi after she was not allowed to take the oath of office in the name of the Matua sect's spiritual guru Harichand Thakur.

The row began after she was told to take the oath again by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar after she substituted “Shri Shri Hari Guru Chand Thakur” in place of “God” while taking the oath of office.

“It is an unfortunate day that I can’t take my God’s name in Parliament. It is deeply insulting to the Matua community. Prime Minister visits our temple and speaks about our God, but we aren’t allowed to take oath in his name in our Parliament,” Thakur said, according to the Hindu newspaper.

Dhankar asked her to adhere to the prescribed format and urged her to take the oath again. It comes at a time when both TMC and BJP have been wooing the Matua community amidst elections.
