The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod to a proposal from the Uttarakhand Health Department, allowing postgraduate trainee doctors to voluntarily provide medical services during the Char Dham Yatra.

This landmark decision is seen as a boost to Uttarakhand's health preparations and a potential blueprint for future public health initiatives. Offering a unique convergence of social service, training, and hands-on experience, this initiative marks a significant opportunity for the nation’s budding doctors.

Health Secretary Dr. R Rajesh Kumar expressed readiness to deliver top-notch health services during the Yatra, as directed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Health Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat.

In a noteworthy development, postgraduate medical professionals, including those pursuing MD, MS, and DNB, can now earn a District Residency Program (DRP) certificate through their service on the Yatra.

The NMC has confirmed that this service will count towards their clinical rotation or DRP, eliminating the need for an additional three-month training period.

Chief Minister Dhami hailed the NMC's approval as a step towards enhancing the safety and convenience of the Char Dham Yatra, reinforcing the collaborative spirit between central and state governments for public welfare.

He highlighted that the initiative not only ensures robust health security for the pilgrims but also allows young doctors to cultivate their skills with a sense of devotion to service.

Health Secretary Dr. Kumar underscored the dual benefit of aiding pilgrims and equipping trainee doctors with practical experience to handle medical and emergency scenarios in challenging Himalayan conditions.

The health department is committed to orchestrating necessary arrangements for the successful execution of the initiative.

NMC Secretary Dr. Raghav Langer commended the synergy between academic and public health sectors that this initiative represents.

He noted the critical role doctors will play amidst the challenging conditions, including large crowds and difficult weather during the Yatra.

The Uttarakhand government will ensure suitable accommodation, meals, training, service certificates, and other essential facilities for these doctors. Enhanced medical units are set to be established along the Yatra routes, guaranteeing prompt and expert healthcare for pilgrims.

Following the NMC's approval, medical institutions nationwide have responded positively to trainee doctors' involvement. Many young doctors view this as a significant milestone for service-oriented career advancement.

This initiative epitomizes cooperative federal governance, showcasing a united effort by state and central entities to innovate and implement partnership-driven solutions, ensuring a safe and smooth religious pilgrimage.
