PM Modi extends warm wishes as Sunita returns from ISS

In a heartfelt gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent well wishes to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams as she begins her journey back from the International Space Station (ISS) following an impressive nine-month mission.

The personal letter, entrusted to astronaut Mike Massimino, conveyed the unwavering pride of 1.4 billion Indians. PM Modi wrote, "Even though you are thousands of miles away, you remain close to our hearts."

Williams, along with her colleague astronaut Butch Wilmore, undocked from the ISS on March 18, 2025, aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon. Their return to Earth caps a mission initially slated for just eight days, but extended due to technical challenges with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.

In his correspondence, PM Modi lauded Williams for her outstanding contributions to space exploration and extended an invitation for her to visit India upon her return. "India is praying for your health and success," he penned, underscoring the nation’s deep connection with one of its distinguished daughters.

Williams has expressed profound gratitude for the Prime Minister's supportive words and India's encouragement throughout her mission.

NASA has ensured that all necessary preparations are in place for a safe re-entry, targeting a splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean at approximately 3:27 AM IST on March 19. The Crew Dragon spacecraft will execute a series of critical descent maneuvers, including discarding its trunk and deploying parachutes to achieve a secure landing.

This mission exemplifies not just personal triumph but also the resilience and adaptability required in overcoming unanticipated adversities in space exploration.

As Williams and Wilmore conclude their expedition, their return stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations of astronauts. Recovery teams are poised to retrieve the astronauts upon splashdown and ensure their safe return to solid ground, marking the end of a noteworthy journey.
