Speaking during the debate on the women's reservation bill in the Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi said that the Congress would support the legislation. She, however, had a question. The former Congress president asked the government how long will the women have to wait for reservation in the Parliament. Sonia added that the bill should be implemented immediately after it is passed.

Even if passed in this session, the bill will come into effect only after a delimitation exercise is completed and is therefore unlikely to be in force during the next Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

Initiating the debate from the opposition's side in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi said, "I stand here in support of Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam." She said any delay in implementing the women's reservation bill will be a gross injustice to Indian women.

"The immediate implementation of the women's reservation bill by removing all obstacles is not only necessary but also possible," Gandhi said.
