Zafar Mahal targeted by vandals in Delhi, lattice screen destroyed

Zafar Mahal, a 19th-century structure in Mehrauli, was damaged by unknown vandals recently, the Archaeological Survey of India said. The vandals destroyed a jali (lattice) screen that was situated near the entrance to the premises.

The lattice screen that was damaged surrounds the empty grave of Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, who intended to be burried there before being exiled to Burma by the British.

The Indian Express reported that the monument's in-charge filed a complaint with local police. However, there are conflicting reports that suggest that the police claim not to have received any such complaint from the ASI.

As the social media users came across this news, they started outraging over it. Historian William Dalrymple, known for his work on Mughal history, criticised the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for negligence, calling the incident "appalling."
