<p>Kuldeep Srivastava, IMD Scientist told Hindustan Times, "Easterly winds began to impact Delhi from Tuesday and gained strength on Wednesday when the HI crossed 55&deg;C. Despite strong wind speed on Thursday, which led to a drop in Delhi&rsquo;s maximum temperature, the HI remained high as there was a lot of moisture in the air."</p>

<p>You must have heard of 'casual Friday' in the corporate world, but casual Monday is a rare thing, right?<br>The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in India introduced the '<em>Wrinkles Acche Hai'</em> campaign to get people to wear non-ironed clothes to work on Mondays in a symbolic fight against climate change.<br>Officials at CSIR have confirmed that this initiative has been taken to save energy and wearing non-iron clothes to work once in week will help to save our mother Earth and the planet.</p>
<h3><strong>'Wrinkles Acche Hai' campaign</strong></h3>
<p>Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the first female Director General of CSIR, emphasizes that Wrinkles Acche Hai (WAH) Mondays are part of a broader energy literacy initiative. "CSIR has chosen to participate by adopting non-ironed attire on Mondays. Ironing clothes generates approximately 200 g of carbon dioxide emissions per set. Therefore, opting for non-ironed clothing can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions," she explained.</p>
<p>The 'Wrinkles Acche Hain' campaign has been launched as part of the 'Swachhata Pakhwada' from May 1-15.</p>
<p>Officials said that the new initiative is about making people aware of climate change and how the tiniest things can contribute to the global fight against it.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As a component of its broader energy-saving endeavour, CSIR is instituting several standard operating procedures to diminish electricity usage in all laboratories nationwide, aiming initially for a 10% reduction in workplace electricity expenses. These SOPs will undergo pilot testing from June to August 2024.</p>

<p>&nbsp;Nepal Army on Sunday said that it will collect around 10 tonnes of garbage and five bodies lying at Mt. Everest as it launches Mountain Cleaning Campaign 2024 in the Everest region.</p>
<p>A 12-member team led by Maj. Aditya Karki will embark on the Everest base camp on April 14 to bring the garbage from Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Nuptse, according to a source from the Nepal Army.</p>
<p>The source said an 18-member Sherpa team will assist the army in its cleaning expedition.</p>
<p>The expedition, to be flagged off by Nepal Army chief Gen. Prabhuram Sharma here on April 11, will bring at least 10 tonnes of garbage and five dead bodies of climbers lying unattended in the mountain, Nepal Army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Krishna Prasad Bhandari said.</p>
<p>Biodegradable waste will be brought to Namche Bazaar below the base camp and handed to the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) for proper treatment.</p>
<p>The non-biodegradable waste and dead bodies will be brought to Kathmandu, the spokesperson said.</p>
<p>The cleaning campaign will control human-made pollution in the Himalayas and address the problems related to climate change, Bhandari said.</p>
<p>The Nepal Army will collaborate with the Ministry of Forest and Environment, the Tourism Department and the Nepal Mountaineers Association for the Everest region's cleaning campaign.</p>

<p>The World Meteorological Organization has issued a warning that cautions against rapidly rising temperatures this year.</p>

<p>The UN weather agency is sounding a &ldquo;red alert&rdquo; about global warming, citing record-smashing increases last year in greenhouse gases, land and water temperatures and melting of glaciers and sea ice, and warning that the world's efforts to reverse the trend have been inadequate.</p>
<p>The World Meteorological Organization said there is a &ldquo;high probability&rdquo; that 2024 will be another record-hot year.</p>
<p>The Geneva-based agency, in a &ldquo;State of the Global Climate&rdquo; report released Tuesday, ratcheted up concerns that a much-vaunted climate goal is increasingly in jeopardy: That the world can unite to limit planetary warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial levels.</p>
<p>&ldquo;As Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, I am now sounding the red alert about the state of the climate,&rdquo; said Celeste Saulo.</p>
<p>The 12-month period from March 2023 to February 2024 pushed beyond that 1.5-degree limit, averaging 1.56 C (2.81 F) higher, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Service.</p>
<p>It said the calendar year 2023 was just below 1.5 C at 1.48 C (2.66 F), but a record hot start to this year pushed beyond that level for the 12-month average.</p>
<p>Omar Baddour, WMO's chief of climate monitoring, said the year after an El Ni&ntilde;o event &mdash; the cyclical warming of the Pacific Ocean that affects global weather patterns &mdash; normally tends to be warmer.</p>
<p>&ldquo;So we cannot say definitively about 2024 is going to be the warmest year. But what I would say: There is a high probability that 2024 will again break the record of 2023, but let&rsquo;s wait and see,&rdquo; he said.</p>
<p>The latest WMO findings are especially stark when compiled in a single report. In 2023, over 90% of ocean waters experienced heat wave conditions at least once. Glaciers monitored since 1950 lost the most ice on record. Antarctic sea ice retreated to its lowest level ever.</p>
<p>Saulo called the climate crisis &ldquo;the defining challenge that humanity faces&rdquo; and said it combines with a crisis of inequality, as seen in growing food insecurity and migration.</p>
<p>WMO said the impact of heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and tropical cyclones, exacerbated by climate change, was felt in lives and livelihoods on every continent in 2023.</p>
<p>But the agency also acknowledged &ldquo;a glimmer of hope&rdquo; in trying to keep the Earth from running too high a fever. It said renewable energy generation capacity from wind, solar and waterpower rose nearly 50% from 2022 to a total of 510 gigawatts.</p>
<p>The report comes as climate experts and government ministers are to gather in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, on Thursday and Friday to press for greater climate action, including increased national commitments to fight global warming.</p>

<p>French farmers are protesting environmental policies they say are hurting their profits and rendering them unable to compete with less stringent neighbours.</p>

<p>French farmers will launch an indefinite "siege" of Paris beginning Monday, choking off major highways and moving toward the capital as they demand better working conditions.</p>
<p>For days, nationwide protests have flared in Europe's largest agriculture producer, with farmers angered in part by red tape and environmental policies they say are hurting their bottom lines and rendering them unable to compete with less stringent neighbours.</p>
<p>Across France, farmers have used tractors and trucks to block roads and jam traffic. They plan to step up their pressure campaign by establishing eight chokepoints along the major arteries to Paris on Monday afternoon.</p>
<p>The government plans to mobilise 15,000 police and paramilitary gendarmes in response, with the forces told to show "moderation".</p>
<p>"We don&rsquo;t intend to allow government buildings, or tax collection buildings, or grocery stores to be damaged or trucks transporting foreign produce to be stopped. Obviously, that is unacceptable," French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said ahead of the planned siege.</p>
<p>He said President Emmanuel Macron had instructed the security operation to ensure both Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport to the north and Orly to the south remain open, and the Rungis international wholesale food market south of Paris continues to operate.</p>
<p>Police and gendarmes are also under orders to prevent any incursion into Paris itself, said Darmanin.</p>
<p>The government has been trying to keep discontent among farmers from spreading ahead of European Parliament elections later this year, which are being seen as a key test for Macron's government.</p>
<p>During a visit to a farm on Sunday, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal scrambled to address farmers' concerns, after a raft of concessions announced Friday failed to defuse the crisis.</p>
<p>"I want us to clarify things and see what extra measures we can take" to meet farmers' complaints that they face unfair competition, he said.</p>
<p>Attal agreed it was not right that French farmers were forbidden by environmental regulations from using certain products that neighbouring countries, such as Italy, still had the right to use.</p>
<p>Farmers have described being "fed-up" with their conditions, including falling wages, low pensions and mountains of red tape.</p>
<h3>Mona Lisa stunt</h3>
<p>Two activists, on Sunday, hurled soup at the glass protecting the Mona Lisa painting at the Louvre Museum in a stunt to call attention to the agriculture industry.</p>
<p>"What is more important? Art or the right to healthy and sustainable food," the activists asked, standing in front of the painting and speaking in turn.</p>
<p>"Your agricultural system is sick. Our farmers are dying at work," they said, before security cleared the room.</p>

<p>In 2004, India&rsquo;s apex court banned mining activities within 25 kilometers of Delhi, and hope dawned for this place which was once ecologically scarred due to years of mining and stone crushing. Planting duties were handed over to the Haryana Forest Development Corporation.</p>
<p>Today, this park is home to over 90,000 trees, over 160 bird species, and countless other forms of life.</p>
<p>If you look closely, you can still find traces of the past... of mining of quartzite, sand, and mica, but now... it's a city of forests.</p>
<p>But it wasn&rsquo;t all smooth sailing...</p>
<p>After the forests flourished, in 2018 a plan was drafted to connect a highway from Jaipur to a key road in Gurugaon cutting right through the heart of the park. This would have killed the forest.</p>
<p>1. The forest that generates 7.07% of Delhi-NCR&rsquo;s oxygen demand.<br>2. The forest that sequesters 9,107 tonnes of carbon.<br>3. The forest that contains species that store the most amount of Co2 (<em>Butea monosperma, Terminalia arjuna</em>)<br>4. The Forest that acts as a green barrier for the capital city.</p>
<p>But the members of &lsquo;I Am Gurgaon&rsquo; wouldn&rsquo;t let that happen. Over 1,500 people stood up and said...<br>'NO ROAD THROUGH ARAVALLI BIODIVERSITY PARK'<br><br>And just like that, the plan was shelved.</p>
<p>These revolutionary 'urban rewilders' showed what a people&rsquo;s movement can achieve. They looked at a land stripped of life and poured their hearts into bringing it back.</p>
<p>Recently, this park received a new honour. The International Union for Conservation of Nature recognized it as the first Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures site in India.</p>
<p>Officials say the OECM tag, does not bring any legal or financial implications, but designates the area as a biodiversity hotspot on the international map. They get benefits in terms of reputation.</p>
<p>So, these revolutionary &lsquo;urban rewilders&rsquo; showed what a people's movement can achieve.Turning a once barren landscape into a vibrant green jewel.</p>

<h2>Vivek Gurav's 'Pune Ploggers' campaign transformed a local river clean-up into a global environmental movement, inspiring thousands to take action.</h2>

<p>This story answers a simple question: can jogging help save the environment?<br><br>It was in 2014, that a young Vivek had moved to Maharashtra&rsquo;s tech hub Pune for college. As he settled in the city leaving his sleepy town behind, a stark visual reality hit him.<br>Pune&rsquo;s rivers were polluted in comparison to the clean water bodies in his hometown. This was enough for Vivek to embark on a journey to save the environment and his efforts started from being individualistic, grew to be local and eventually global.&nbsp;<br>So, Vivek started cleaning the river front because that was the easiest thing he could do. But the young boy who was just 18 at that time soon realised that the cleaning needed a group effort.<br>&nbsp;<br>For this he started a special campaign called 'Pune Ploggers.' And it soon showed visible results.&nbsp;<br><br>Vivek first used social media to invite like-minded people to jog and pick trash with him. The concept, popularly known as plogging, evolved in Sweden, and Vivek was able to gather young people from all over Pune.<br><br>His campaign kept growing and now has 32 chapters across India. As &lsquo;Pune Ploggers&rsquo;<br>&nbsp;completed 500 plogging drives in Pune, collecting over 2,000 tonnes of rubbish,<br><br>Vivek&rsquo;s engineering studies took a backseat. He seized the opportunity to study Environmental Policy at The University of Bristol, earning a full scholarship.<br><br>&nbsp;In Bristol, Vivek kept plogging and made new friends who joined his cause. Twelve nationalities are part of his group. His hard work paid off when he travelled to 30 cities in the UK in just 30 days.<br>Vivek&rsquo;s global campaign gained recognition. He received &lsquo;Points of Light&rsquo; award from then British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson and was also invited to share his story at 10 Downing Street by Johnson&rsquo;s successor Rishi Sunak. What sets &lsquo;Pune ploggers&rsquo; apart is their refusal to seek or accept financial donations.<br>Vivek&rsquo;s goal is simple: he wants people to dedicate their weekends to picking up trash while jogging or walking, contributing to the environment in a tangible way.<br>Back in India, Vivek&rsquo;s plogger-family grew bigger, and his work inspired over 20,000 volunteers worldwide. <br><br>And ask them about their work; they say where there's a goal, there's always a way.</p>

<p>Small pieces of plastic pose a significant hazard. These small pieces of plastics go into our ocean and then into the systems of the ocean animals through food. This causes huge harm to the innocent animals who unknowingly gulp down plastic particles.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Surprisingly, these small plastic cutouts also end up in garbage bins, water sources, and landfills. They get consumed by stray animals causing severe damage. By refraining from cutting the corners of these packets, we can significantly reduce our ecological footprint.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Here's how we can make a difference by ditching a common practice of not cutting the tips completely and just a bit to pour out milk, curd or oil.</p>
<h3><strong>Why are small plastic pieces not recyclable? &nbsp;</strong></h3>
<p>To understand this concept, we must first understand the composition of plastics found in milk packets. These packets often contain low-density polyethylene (LDPE). For this type of plastic to be recyclable, it requires specific conditions: high temperature compression and a particular shape. Otherwise, these small pieces contribute little to recycling efforts.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If these plastic scraps don't reach recycling facilities, they degrade into microplastics, similar in size to the microbeads. These microbeads can then find their way into water bodies and landfills via rain and wind, causing clogging issues. &nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Hazards posed by these minuscule triangular plastics</strong></h3>
<p>These tiny microplastics intrude our ecosystem, posing threats to both animals and humans.</p>
<p>They enter water bodies and are ingested by marine animals, often leading to death&nbsp;</p>
<p>Additionally, these minuscule plastics end up in landfills, impeding the smooth flow of water.</p>
<p>More than one-third of daily household &lsquo;branded plastic&rsquo; waste originates from dairy product packaging.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Microbeads from milk packets can linger in landfills for extended periods.
