Upgrade your shower routine: Say goodbye to loofahs with these hygienic alternatives

New York dermatologists are emphasizing the crucial reason why avoiding loofahs in the shower is essential.

Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology: Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, warned about the potential risks associated with loofah use, such as causing microtraumas on the skin and, if not maintained or replaced properly, leading to the growth of mold or bacteria.

She advised using alternative options like silicone scrubs, washcloths, exfoliating gloves, or dry brushes, which are easier to clean and harbor fewer bacteria.

Silicone scrubs effectively eliminate dead skin cells, dirt, and excess oil from the skin, with the added benefit of not retaining bacteria or mold, allowing them to last six months or longer before needing replacement.

Exfoliating gloves offer another reliable option for shower use, effectively removing dead skin and unclogging pores, particularly beneficial for those with oily skin.

For those reluctant to part with their loofahs, Dr. Garshick recommends regular cleaning and replacement. Natural fiber loofahs should be replaced every three to four weeks, while plastic ones can last up to three months.
