Hooked to true events based crime series? Here's what experts have to say about it

With Netflix paving way for Indian crime series based on true or real events on its platform, most of us are now being identified as people obsessed with anything related to such incidents. This also make us question - Are we normal? Why are we binge-watching real life crime series? What is so fascinating about it?

Well, here are your questions answered by experts and it turns out that it's absolutely normal to be wanting to binge on such shows.

According to Dr Michael Mantell, former chief psychologist of the San Diego Police Department, the interest in crime, caters to a number of different healthy psychological purposes. However, there are some limits like- if all you do is read about crime and talk about it non-stop, have crime posters or newspaper article clippings in your desk drawer, then that might be a problem.

On the other hand, forensic psychologist Dr. Paul G Mattiuzzi said that evil fascinates people and the real crime series embodies our fascination with that dynamic.

A study also suggests that the number of women interested in real crime genre is higher than that of men and it increased by 16 per cent in 2019. Experts say that such content helps women to understand the mindset of criminals and they subconsciously consume information on how to cope with similar situations.
