Chardham Yatra 2024: Uttarakhand experiences massive traffic jams, opt for these better alternatives

According to a report around 26 lakh pilgrims have registered for this year’s Chardham Yatra. Reports of the Gangotri-Yamunotri Highway experiencing massive traffic jams have been making headlines.

Is it better to avoid travelling to Uttarakhand?

Pilgrims are facing hours of delays and landed in unnecessary ruckus by other frustrated pilgrims.

Apart from the Chardham, the whole state of Uttarakhand is experiencing severe traffic jams on the way towards the popular destinations like Nainital, Mussoorie and Dehradun. As per reports, tourists have faced hours-long traffic jams even in Bhimtal, Ranibagh, Bhowali, and Kainchi Dham. According to travel authorities, it is better to avoid travelling to Uttarakhand and cancel your plans to the 'Devbhoomi' until situations get better.

      Alternatives to Uttarakhand’s hill stations

Even though most of North Indian hill stations are jam packed right now, there are some off beat places in Himachal you can visit. Rather than going to Simla, Manali, Dharamshala, it is better to plan for lesser known places like Chitkul, Parvati Valley, Lahaul and Spiti. You can also opt for Kashmir and Ladakh if you are looking for colder regions.
If you want to explore the North Eastern states, then plan a trip to Sikkim, Shillong or Arunachal Pradesh for a serene and enjoyable vacation.

Things to keep in mind when you travel to hill stations during summers

Even if the temperatures are much lesser at the hill stations as compared to the planes and cities, it is important to take precautions while travelling to these destinations.

      • High altitudes can cause altitude sickness. Take it slow, especially on the first day, to allow your body to adjust.
      • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help acclimate to the altitude.
      • UV rays are stronger at higher altitudes, so use sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats to protect against sunburn.
      • Weather in hill stations can change rapidly. Wear layers that you can add or remove as needed.
      • Roads to hill stations can be steep, winding, and sometimes in poor condition. Ensure your vehicle is in good shape and consider hiring a local driver if you're not experienced with such driving conditions.
      • Know the local emergency numbers and have contacts for your accommodation and tour operators.
