CWG 2022 Day 1 Highlights: Nataraj in 100m backstroke final; 14-year-old Anahat makes winning start

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 highlights: There are no medal matches on Day 1 of the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games 2022, but quite a few key contests. 14-year-old squash sensation Anahat Singh made a superb start of her CWG campaign as she won Round of 64 match, 3-0. 

Earlier, Pugilist Shiva Thapa stormed into the next round after he defeated Pakistan's Suleman Baloch. While India's women's team shed the early advantage as they lost their opener by 3 wickets against Australia. India's Badminton contingent will also start their campaign on Day 1 of Birmingham 2022 when they play against arch-rivals Pakistan in the mixed events.

Meanwhile, Indian women's hockey team made easy work against Ghana in Pool A, winning the match 5-0. 

India's women's table tennis side, led by Manika Batra, defeated South Africa and Fiji with an identical scorelines of 3-0.

Lawn Bowls: India's Tania Choudhary lost 21-10; Indian Men's team lost 23-6 to New Zealand.

Triathlon (Women's): India's Pragnya Mohan and Sanjana Joshi finished 26th and 28th respectively

CWG 2022: As Day 1 at Birmingham 2022 concludes, here is India's Day 2 schedule

India can hope to bag their first medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 on Saturday. Olympic silver medallist and current Commonwealth Games champion Mirabai Chanu will be in action alongside Bindyarani Devi in the weightlifting event on Day two.

CWG 2022 LIVE: How Shiva Thapa emerged victorious against his Pakistani counterpart

Ace Indian boxer Shiva Thapa began his CWG 2022 campaign on a rousing note by defeating Pakistan's Suleman Baloch in the first round of the 63.5kg category.

28-year-old Thapa hardly broke a sweat as he registered a comprehensive 5-0 win over Baloch to move to the pre-quarterfinals of the light welterweight category.

Thapa, five-time Asian Championship medallist, was technically far superior to Baloch and landed a flurry of sharp punches on his opponent.

The former world championship bronze medallist also defended well as he danced around the ring with ease. At one point, Baloch came forward to punch the Indian but Thapa effortlessly moved out of the way as the Pakistan boxer fell on the canvas.

CWG 2022 LIVE: Cricket- Australia 55-5 in 8 Overs

Renuka Singh Thakur was on fire as he took all four Australian wickets. The Aussies, on the other hand, kept their momentum going despite losing wickets in the pack.
