Big controversy over Deepti Sharma running out Charlie Dean as India complete 3-0 clean sweep

While India’s final ODI against England was supposed to be all about veteran Jhulan Goswami’s farewell, the biggest talking point proved to be the run-out that gave India a 3-0 clean sweep against the hosts.

With England needing 17 for victory, all-rounder Deepti Sharma ran Charlie Dean out at the non-striker’s end for the batter was backing up too far.

And while it was a perfectly legal mode of dismissal, the cricket fraternity was divided about whether it was In the spirit of the game.

While the English commentators were visibly very unhappy, there was a war of words that broke out on social media between Indian & English fans.

Even the official fan groups of the two nations, The Bharat Army & The Barmy Army were at loggerheads. While The Barmy Army said it was a terrible way to end a terrific game, the Bharat Army hit back by reminding the English fans about the 2019 World Cup final.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who many would remember dominated headlines after he ran Jos Buttler out in a similar fashion in the IPL, was in fact trending ahead of Deepti Sharma herself.

In fact, Ashwin expressed his surprise over the trend and tweeted that it was Deepti Sharma who should get the attention for being the hero.

England bowler Stuart Broad also drew the ire of Indian fans, who were quick to remind him about how he stood his ground during the 2013 Ashes despite clearly edging one straight to slip.

While many deemed it controversial, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur in her post-match comments put her support behind Deepti Sharma, stating she’ll always back her since she didn’t do anything against the rules.
