On day three of the first Test, South Africa concluded their first innings with a total of 408 runs, massively overshadowing India's total of 245. This performance by the Proteas compounded India's struggles, as they extended their lead to a significant 163 runs.

The third day witnessed the South African batters adding an impressive 152 runs to their overnight tally of 256 for 5. The Indian bowling attack faced a tough challenge, struggling to contain the Proteas' scoring spree.

Dean Elgar continued from where he left off, amassing a remarkable 185 runs. His partnership with Marco Jansen proved to be a thorn in India's side, with Jansen contributing substantially and eventually remaining undefeated at 84 runs. Their combined effort was instrumental in propelling South Africa beyond the 400-run benchmark.

Jansen's unbeaten 84 was a highlight, while other notable contributions came from Dean Elgar with 185 runs. Gerald Coetzee (19), Kagiso Rabada (1), Nandre Burger (0), and Temba Bavuma (0) were among the other batsmen who fell during the innings.
