Harmanpreet Kaur's on-field outburst: A lookback at other unforgettable player-umpire clashes | IND v BAN

Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been at the receiving end for her behaviour after a tied ODI series vs Bangladesh was deemed unacceptable. She openly called out the on-field umpire for poor decision-making and was later reprimanded by the ICC.

But it's not the first time that a player got involved in a heated exchange with the umpire. Let's look back at other instances of player-umpire bust-ups from the past.

Team India and Steve Bucknor

The Australian summer of 2008 was probably the hottest of them all, not just because of the weather but because of what transpired between India and Australia in the Test series.

Steve Bucknor, the official umpire for the series was removed by the ICC after the 2nd Test as Team India made it clear that they would only continue the series if he wasn't officiating.

Bucknor made a couple of howlers in the Sydney Test which cost India the match.

The West Indian umpire later even admitted to his mistakes and said that the howlers haunted him after retirement.

Michael Clarke and Aleem Dar

A list of scuffles between cricketers and umpires would be incomplete without the Aussies. During a Test match of the 2013 Ashes series, Australian skipper Michael Clarke was involved in a heated exchange with on-field umpire Aleem Dar.

With the light fading away quickly, Clarke wanted the final day to be called off but he was left fuming when the umpires took longer than usual to call for the light meter. Clarke was then seen exchanging words with Aleem Dar as the umpire kept him away using his left hand.

Remembering the incident, the then-Aussie captain said, 'I remember Aleem touching me and I asked him politely to not touch me because if I touched him I’d be suspended for three matches.'

Shakib Al Hasan loses his temper over the umpire

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has had a few disciplinary issues with the umpires.

In the first of such incidents, Shakib lost his cool twice in a Dhaka Premier League match in 2021. After his LBW appeal against Mushfiqur Rahim was turned down, Shakib first kicked the stumps.

In the next over, he was once again left frustrated with a decision and angrily uprooted the stumps and threw them into the turf. He was slapped with a 3-match ban and a fine after the match.

MS Dhoni walks onto the pitch in IPL

MS Dhoni is known for his calmness but the ice man also lost his cool during an IPL match.

During a Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals match in IPL 2019, Dhoni charged towards the umpire from the team dugout, which was rather uncharacteristic of MSD.

CSK needed 18 runs off the last over and Ben Stokes bowled a high full toss to Mitchell Santner but the on-field umpire first signalled it as a no-ball but changed his decision after consulting with the square-leg umpire.

This left Dhoni baffled and he charged towards the pitch and exchanged a few words with the umpire.

The delivery was eventually deemed legal. However, replays later showed that it was a waist-high no-ball.
