Mohammed Shami's Test series participation against South Africa in doubt, likely to be ruled out

Mohammed Shami's participation in the upcoming Test series against South Africa is uncertain, with a high likelihood of him being ruled out due to injury. According to Cricbuzz, Shami is dealing with an ankle injury and will not join the rest of the Indian Test squad traveling to South Africa.

The final group of players, including captain Rohit Sharma, is set to depart for Johannesburg on December 15, but Shami, aged 33, will not be among them.

The group flying to South Africa includes prominent players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin, Navdeep Saini, and Harshit Rana, departing via Dubai.

The Indian selectors have yet to announce a direct replacement for Shami. However, with an extensive roster of over 75 Indian players across various formats touring South Africa, it's believed a pacer from this pool could fill in for the Test series.

Shami's selection for the Test series was conditional, given his ongoing medical treatment. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had previously acknowledged his injury situation in a statement on November 30, stating, "Mr. Mohd. Shami is currently undergoing medical treatment, and his availability is subject to fitness."

The fast bowler has been enduring ankle pain and reportedly managed this discomfort throughout the World Cup, particularly while landing his right foot during delivery.

The first Test of the series is scheduled to begin on Boxing Day, December 26, at Centurion, followed by the second Test at Newlands in Cape Town. Before the start of the Test series, a three-day preparatory game is planned from December 20 for the Test squad members.
