Naseem Shah: Pakistani pacer doubtful for ODI World Cup 2023, could miss Australia tour | Asia Cup 2023

Scans have revealed that Naseem Shah's injury might be way more serious than earlier anticipated, with the Pakistani speedster set to be ruled out for the remainder of the year.

Naseem Shah: Pakistani pacer doubtful for ODI World Cup 2023, could miss Australia tour | Asia Cup 2023

Pakistan's promising fast bowler, Naseem Shah, faces an uncertain future regarding his role in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. Recent scans have unveiled a more severe injury to his right shoulder than initially anticipated, possibly sidelining him for the rest of the year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is seeking a second medical opinion to confirm the extent of the injury. Initial scans conducted in Dubai strongly suggest a significant layoff, casting doubts over Naseem's participation not only in the World Cup but also the Test series in Australia and potentially the next Pakistan Super League.

Naseem Shah had to prematurely leave the field during Pakistan's second game against India at the Asia Cup last week. An injury to a muscle just below his bowling shoulder was identified as the cause. While this injury is not a recurrence of any previous shoulder issues, it could have lasting consequences for his career.

The potential absence of Naseem Shah in the World Cup and future series is a considerable setback for Pakistan. In the past year, he has evolved into an all-format bowler, showcasing his prowess in red-ball cricket as well as limited-overs formats, making him a vital asset for the team. Alongside Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, he forms an essential part of Pakistan's formidable bowling unit.

The PCB is closely monitoring Naseem Shah's situation and is expected to make an official decision based on the secondary scan results, which will be available in a few days. In the meantime, Pakistan is evaluating replacement options, with Zaman Khan already stepping in during the Asia Cup in Naseem's absence, while Mohammad Hasnain is also being considered despite his ongoing injury concerns.
