In a series of consequential decisions impacting Pakistan cricket, Haris Rauf's central contract was terminated by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following an investigation into his refusal to participate in the winter Test tour to Australia. Additionally, the PCB announced the end of Mohammad Hafeez's tenure as Team Director, marking significant shifts within the team's management and player lineup.

Rauf's refusal, which left the PCB in a challenging position last November, prompted the board to also restrict his participation in any foreign league until June 30, 2024. His last-minute withdrawal, despite previous commitments to manage his workload, forced Pakistan to rely on a less experienced pace battery for the 2023-24 three-Test series in Australia.

Chief selector Wahab Riaz had expressed his disappointment then, noting Rauf's initial agreement to play and subsequent concerns about his fitness and workload. "His absence will affect the team combination," Riaz had stated, highlighting the impact of Rauf's decision on the squad's dynamics.

The PCB emphasized the seriousness of Rauf's actions, noting that refusal to join the Test squad without a valid medical report or justification contradicts the obligations of a central contract. "The PCB management provided a chance for a personal hearing to Haris in compliance with the principles of natural justice...and his response was found unsatisfactory," the board explained, underlining the process leading to the contract termination.

In parallel developments, Mohammad Hafeez's departure from the role of Team Director comes after a brief and turbulent period marked by challenges on and off the field. Appointed in November following a disappointing World Cup campaign, Hafeez's tenure included a Test series whitewash in Australia and a 4-1 defeat in a T20I series in New Zealand.
