Rohit Sharma defends India's tactical changes despite defeat against Bangladesh | Asia Cup 2023

Despite losing the inconsequential Super Four match of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh, Indian captain Rohit Sharma defended the decision to make five changes to the playing XI, emphasizing how they were looking at the bigger picture ahead of the ODI World Cup.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, he stated, "We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. We wanted to get in some players who are likely to play the World Cup."

Debutant Tilak Varma and middle-order reserve Suryakumar Yadav had their opportunities but couldn't make a substantial impact.

"Axar batted brilliantly, but couldn't finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers," Rohit praised Axar Patel, who made an impressive 42 in the match.

Acknowledging Shubman Gill's outstanding performance, Rohit reiterated his admiration for the young opener, highlighting Gill's consistency over the past year and his dedication to his game.

"Gill's hundred was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows exactly how he wants to play. Pretty clear on what he wants to do for the team. Look at his form over the last year (average of 72). He has been pretty solid against the new ball. He works really hard," said Rohit Sharma, underlining Gill's resilience and commitment to the team.

India will face Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday.
