Travis Head's ODI World Cup participation in doubt after hand fracture during SA vs AUS 4th ODI

In a concerning turn of events, Australian cricketer Travis Head suffered a fracture in his left hand during the fourth ODI against South Africa, casting uncertainty over his availability for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023.

The incident occurred when Head was struck on the hand while attempting a pull shot off Gerald Coetzee's short delivery at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. He received on-field treatment, faced a few more deliveries, and then retired hurt. Afterward, he returned to the field with his left hand in a splint.

Australian head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed the injury and stated, "At this stage, it's a confirmed fracture, and how long that timeframe is, we're yet to determine that, so fingers crossed, clearly with the World Cup fast approaching."

The injury compounds Australia's existing worries ahead of the World Cup, with several key players like Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Cameron Green, Ashton Agar, Spencer Johnson, and Mitchell Marsh dealing with injuries or other concerns.

McDonald expressed hope that Cameron Green would be available for the fifth ODI, stating, "He's been cleared by the medical team...Hopefully, he's available for game five. That's the plan at this stage."
