What is Brumbrella? England's innovative field set-up vs Australia in Ashes 2023

First Bazball, and now Brumbrella.

The new term is the talk of Ashes 2023 ever since England used it vs Australia to dismiss a well-set Usman Khawaja in the Edgbaston Test.

What is Brumbrella?

Khawaja had dropped anchor and was batting on 141 when England skipper Ben Stokes came up with an innovative field set-up which led to the Aussie batter's dismissal.

Stokes placed 6 fielders in front of Khawaja to build pressure on him. All fielders were placed in close-catching positions, 3 on the offside and 3 on the leg as the field setup looked like an umbrella.

The plan quickly worked as Khawaja was put off by the fielders and Ollie Robinson took just 2 balls to clean him up.

Brumbrella takes its name from a large pitch covering that was used at Edgbaston from 1981 to 2001.
