AIFF executive committee member Deepak Sharma arrested by Goa Police

The Goa Police have arrested All India Football Federation (AIFF) Executive Committee member Deepak Sharma, on charges of assault as alleged by two female footballers of Khad FC. The incident reportedly took place in the athletes' hotel room amidst the Indian Women's League currently underway, with Sharma accused of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the alleged physical assault.

This incident also drew the attention of Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who promptly called for immediate and stringent measures to be undertaken by the AIFF. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "The ministry of Sports has taken a serious note of an alleged physical assault upon women footballers by an official during the ongoing Indian Women's League in Goa. All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been directed to take quick action and ensure the safety and security of our footballers. The ministry has further directed AIFF to take strong legal action and inform the ministry about actions taken. The safety and security of players are our utmost priority."

Responding to the directives and the nature of the allegations, the AIFF had previously instructed Sharma to cease all football-related engagements. This was part of the initial steps taken while a dedicated 3-member committee was established to investigate the complaints thoroughly.

The arrest reportedly came about after the aggrieved footballers, supported by several colleagues, proceeded to file a formal complaint against Sharma, leading to his subsequent arrest by the Goa Police.
