UEFA general secretary Theodore Theodoridis pledged to do more to promote human rights and protect women from abuse in the sport.

At the UN, UEFA promises to do more to safeguard human rights and combat discrimination

In honour of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, messages will be aired on television and social media during Champions League games next week, UEFA General Secretary Theodore Theodoridis announced on Tuesday during a sports conference held in the UN's European headquarters. During his speech delivered at the UN, he promised to do more to advance human rights and shield female players from harassment.

UEFA also agreed to strengthen the fight against discrimination in all its forms and admitted to the mistakes made in the past under Theodoridis' leadership.

The event on Tuesday was hosted by the Geneva-based Centre for Sport and Human Rights, UEFA's risk adviser for the 2024 European Championship in men's soccer which it wants to be inclusive and tackle discrimination.

Three weeks after forcing national team player Jenni Hermoso to kiss him on the lips during the Women's World Cup trophy presentation, Luis Rubiales resigned in September from his positions as president of the Spanish soccer federation and vice president of UEFA citing this incident as an example said, "We will also work to make sure that the rapid growth in the women's game is joined by greater efforts to prevent harassment, abuse and violence against women."
