Euro 2024 Group Stage Recap: Drama, milestones, historic feats and unwanted records; all you need to know

The UEFA Euro 2024 group stage concluded with a flurry of drama and historic moments, setting the stage for an exhilarating knockout phase. Slovenia and tournament debutants Georgia made history by advancing to the knockout stage for the first time, while Austria emerged as surprise winners of Group D ahead of powerhouses France and the Netherlands.

Spain stood out as the only team to achieve a perfect record, winning all three of their group matches convincingly. However, the group stage also saw unexpected outcomes, such as Ukraine's unfortunate exit despite finishing with four points due to goal difference.

Cristiano Ronaldo, a stalwart of Portuguese football, notably failed to score a goal in the group stage, marking a rare occurrence in major tournament history. Another statistical anomaly was the absence of direct free-kick goals among the 81 goals scored so far.

Group C delivered the joint-lowest goal tally in a group stage, with only seven goals across six matches. The group also witnessed unprecedented back-to-back goalless draws, adding to the tournament's unpredictability.

Looking Ahead to the UEFA Euro 2024 Knockout Stage

With Spain, Germany, Portugal, France, and Belgium all placed on one side of the knockout draw, fans anticipate intense battles and the inevitable elimination of football giants. On the other side, the likes of Netherlands, England, and reigning champions Italy are poised as favorites to progress deep into the tournament.

As the knockout stage promises more drama and potential upsets, football enthusiasts worldwide are eagerly awaiting to see which nation will rise to the occasion and lift the UEFA Euro 2024 trophy on July 14.
