Luis Rubiales: UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin deems prosecution of ex-Spanish FA chief 'illogical'

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has expressed reservations regarding the prosecution of former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales, who's accused of kissing a FIFA Women's World Cup-winning player Jenni Hermoso without her consent. Ceferin, a former criminal defense lawyer, found the allegations of sexual assault and coercion against Rubiales to be "completely illogical."

Spanish state prosecutors are investigating the accusations made by player Jenni Hermoso concerning the incident that occurred at the August 20 final. A restraining order has been issued, keeping Rubiales away from Hermoso. Despite these allegations, Rubiales denies the charges.

Ceferin acknowledged that the actions of Rubiales were inappropriate and incomprehensible. However, he questioned the severity of the accusations. The situation has garnered significant attention and criticism within the Spanish government and football circles.

The incident has brought attention to sexual consent laws in Spain, with the possibility of Rubiales facing trial and potential penalties if found guilty.

Ceferin had advised Rubiales to resign, which he eventually did three weeks after the Spanish women's football team won the World Cup. UEFA noted his resignation and thanked him for his service to European football.

Amidst this, Ceferin has advocated for clearer limits on acceptable behaviour in women's football and expects UEFA to increase opportunities for women officials within the organization.

The UEFA president shared his concerns during an interview conducted on the sidelines of a charity game, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to such sensitive matters within the realm of sports.
