Welcome back to Failed Football Transfers, where we explore the biggest transfers that just didn’t live up to the hype. Today, we dive into one of the costliest flops in modern football history - Philippe Coutinho’s ill-fated move from Liverpool to Barcelona. So, how did the Little Magician’s transfer turn into a disaster at the Camp Nou? Let’s find out.
Philippe Coutinho arrived at Liverpool as a 20-year-old for a measly £8.5 million from Inter Milan in 2013. The Brazilian quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most creative midfielders. His vision, dribbling, and ability to score stunning long-range goals made him a fan favourite at Anfield.
Signed by Brendan Rodgers, Coutinho grew stronger with each season. Under Rodgers' successor Jurgen Klopp, he flourished even further. Between 2013 and 2018, Coutinho contributed to 97 goals across all competitions. His meteoric rise caught Barcelona's attention as the Catalans sought Coutinho to replace Neymar, who had left for Paris Saint-Germain for a record-breaking €222 million in 2017. Coutinho even tried to force a move with a transfer request, but Liverpool stood firm, rejecting multiple bids.
When the transfer window reopened in January 2018, Barcelona’s €160 million bid was accepted - making Coutinho the third most expensive transfer in history. But the record-breaking move quickly turned sour as Coutinho struggled to adapt to life in Spain. His first six months were decent, with 9 goals and 7 assists in 22 appearances, but he was far from the game-changer fans expected.
The 2018-19 season was even worse. Barcelona’s system didn’t suit him, and despite his technical skills, he failed to replicate his form from Liverpool. His confidence dropped, and the enormous price tag began to weigh on him. As the season dragged on, fans grew frustrated, and Coutinho was often benched.
In the summer of 2019, Barcelona loaned Coutinho to Bayern Munich in an attempt to revitalize his career. Ironically, while on loan, Coutinho rediscovered his form, playing a crucial role in Bayern’s historic treble-winning season. His time in Germany was capped off by a jaw-dropping moment of footballing fate - when Bayern thrashed Barcelona 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-final. Coutinho came off the bench to score twice and provide an assist against the very club that sent him out on loan - all within seven minutes of play.
Despite his resurgence at Bayern, Barcelona couldn’t find a buyer willing to match his price. When he returned to the Camp Nou, his fortunes didn’t improve. Injuries kept him sidelined for much of the 2020-21 season, and when he did play, he looked like a shadow of his former self. Over his Barcelona career, Coutinho made 106 appearances, scored 25 goals, and provided 14 assists - nowhere near the level expected for a player of his price.
In January 2022, Coutinho was sent on loan to Aston Villa, reuniting with former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard, who was the manager at Villa Park. A few months later, Villa made the deal permanent for a reported €20 million - a massive drop from his original €160 million transfer fee. But his fortunes didn’t change much, and his Villa stint was marred by inconsistency and injuries. Last season, Coutinho was loaned out to Qatari side Al-Duhail and this campaign, he’s out on loan at his boyhood club Vasco Da Gama.
In the end, Coutinho’s move to Barcelona will be remembered as one of the biggest flops in football history. While he showed flashes of brilliance at Bayern and Villa, his time at the Camp Nou was marked by inconsistency, injuries, and a failure to live up to astronomical expectations.
