Premier League: Unai Emery replaces Steven Gerrard as new Aston Villa manager

After the sacking of Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa appointed Villarreal's Unai Emery as its new manager on Monday.

To get Emery on board, Villa paid £5.2 million buyout fee to Villarreal.

50-year-old Emery will start as Villa's manager on November 1 after his work permit formalities are completed.

Having coached Arsenal in 2018-19, this will be Emery's second stint in the Premier League.

The 50-year old had been with Villarreal since July 2020. Previously, he coached Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla as well.

Meanwhile, second-tier club Middlesbrough also got a new coach in Michael Carrick, who was a former Manchester United midfielder and assistant manager. He will replace Chris Wilder.

Middlesbrough are currently 21st in the Championship table, just one point above the relegation zone.
