It was all down to a few good deliveries, said Sunrisers Hyderabad assistant coach Simon Helmot as he tried to explain his team's poor batting performance in the IPL final against Kolkata Knight Riders, conceding that the plan to be aggressive fell flat quite early in the match.
SRH were hammered by eight wickets after putting just 113 runs on the board. KKR overhauled the target in just over 10 overs to claim their third IPL trophy on Sunday night.
"We were not going to change our brand or approach. We wanted to be aggressive but also smart and work the situations through," Helmot said in the post-match press conference.
"Our plan certainly wasn't to get bowled out for 113 in the 18th over. We played in a really positive way, but a few good deliveries (from KKR bowlers) early on put us on the back foot. Unfortunately, it was one of those days," he added.
Batting first, the SRH top-order failed to get going, with the three batters getting dismissed for single figures. Big-hitting opener Travis Head fell for his third duck in four matches, dismissed by left-arm pacer Vaibhav Arora.
"Travis is experienced in playing left-arm pace. We have had games where both he and Abhishek (Sharma) have scored runs," the Australian said.
"Obviously, we couldn't get as much (support) from the middle order as we would have liked, but it was a fairly good ball to get rid of him (Head)," he added.
Hailing KKR's performance this season, Helmot said the Shreyas Iyer-led franchise displayed an aggressive mentality throughout the season.
"We have got to give credit to KKR. They have had a great season, winning 79 per cent of their games and playing an aggressive brand with the bat, ball and on the field. But, we will come (back) hard next season," he continued.
"They (KKR) are a very balanced unit with their four pace bowlers and two very accomplished spinners. They have been a terrific team with an excellent batting depth and are deserving victors in this IPL." KKR pacers had a brilliant day in office with Andre Russell grabbing three wickets, while Mitchell Starc and Harshit Rana finishing with two wickets each.
Rana has been the talk of the season and has signed off as the team's second-highest wicket-taker, next to spinner Varun Chakravarthy.
"He is a tricky competitor. He has some variations, especially with the quicker and full balls. He's got those slower ones as well," Helmot said in praise of Rana.
"He certainly has the ability to adapt. There is a rich battery of fast bowlers in India, and that's what the IPL often brings out, which is a good offer for the Indian team. Also, we will be looking for a lot of players like him." When asked to pick positives in SRH's performance this season, Helmot credited pacers T Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar along with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.
"I think Nattu and Bhuvi had a terrific finish to the season, along with Nitish Reddy, who is also probably one of the best fielders in the competition.
"...it's no fluke that we managed to turn the tables from our (bottom-place) finish last year. We will use it as a catalyst coming into the season next year," he concluded.

The 17th edition of the cash-rich league faced numerous logistical and operational challenges. In addition to the regular 10 venues, three additional stadiums had to be prepared to accommodate the expanded 10-team tournament.

Describing them as "unsung heroes", BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Monday announced that groundsmen and curators of all the 10 regular IPL venues will be given Rs 25 lakh each as a token of appreciation for providing "brilliant pitches" during the league.
The IPL concluded in Chennai on Sunday with Kolkata Knight Riders lifting their third overall trophy with an eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad.
"The unsung heroes of our successful T20 season are the incredible ground staff who worked tirelessly to provide brilliant pitches, even in difficult weather conditions," Shah posted on X.
"As a token of our appreciation, the groundsmen and curators at the 10 regular IPL venues will receive INR 25 lakhs each, and the same at the 3 additional venues will get INR 10 lakhs each. Thank you for your dedication and hard work!" he said.
The 10 regular venues for the IPL are Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Jaipur.
The additional venues this year were Guwahati, Visakhapatnam and Dharamsala. While Guwahati was the second home venue for Rajasthan Royals, Visakhapatnam hosted Delhi Capitals' first leg of home matches.
Dharamsala served as the second base for Kings XI Punjab. This year's IPL has been talked about for high-scoring matches with the peak team total record shattered twice. The 250-run mark was crossed as many as eight times this season.
Shah also congratulated KKR for their title triumph.
"Congratulations to the @KKRiders for clinching the 2024 #TATAIPL! The team showed great consistency throughout the tournament and kudos to @ShreyasIyer15 for leading the side brilliantly.
"Once again, thank you to the fans for coming out in big numbers and for making this yet another successful season!" he said.&nbsp;

After resisting the lure of lucrative private leagues for almost a decade because of his commitment towards the 'Baggy Green', Australian pacer Mitchell Starc has hinted that he might quit one format to make room for more franchise cricket in his schedule.
While the 34-year-old didn't specify the format he intends to give up, it is likely to be ODIs considering that the next 50-over World Cup is in 2027.
Starc, who was bought for a record 24.75 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders, was magnificent in the business end of the tournament. He ended up with 17 wickets, including five in the two knock-out games, to engineer a dominant title triumph for the Shah Rukh Khan-owned team.
To a query from PTI as to how he would take it up from here after his best year in franchise cricket, Starc hinted that T20s could gain prominence in his roster.
"For the last nine years, I certainly prioritised Australian cricket. I have pulled out often to have a chance to give my body a break and spend some time away from cricket with my wife as well, so that's certainly been where my head has been for last nine years," Starc said after his match-winning 2/14 in the IPL final against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
"Moving forward, I am certainly close to the end of my career than the start. One format may be dropped off as there is long time till next World Cup and whether that format drops off or not, that will open doors for a lot of franchise cricket," the 'King of Swing' said.
He mentioned that this year's IPL will help him in preparing for the T20 World Cup in West Indies starting June 1.
"...that's the other side of benefit of being here, some amazing players in an amazing tournament and great lead up to WT20 and success has been fantastic. It is great that a lot of players are in good position heading into the World Cup," he said.
He is hopeful of turning up for KKR even next year.
"I don't know the schedule exactly but I have thoroughly enjoyed and hope to be back next year and hopefully, seen in purple and gold again."&nbsp;

After the IPL, Shreyas will have to wait for more game time as he is not a part of India's squad for the T20 World Cup.
The Mumbaikar hoped to keep in touch with the game.
"All we demanded from ourselves was to back each other whatever the situation is. Looking forward to playing more competitive cricket," he said.
The elegant right-hander reserved a special word of praise for Mitchell Starc, whose two wickets in the Power Play denied SRH early momentum.
"That's when all the big players stand up, right! It was a high-pressure game and he's been so good off the field. He's never shown any complacency in his work ethic. He stepped up to the right occasion," he noted.
The Mumbai man also heaped accolades on all-rounder Andre Russell, who produced a three-wicket burst in the final.
"He's got that magic wand. He's looking forward to picking wickets. All the guys stepped up at the right time and that's made it easier. It has been a flawless season."

Starc (2/14), who peaked at the right time after a disappointing league phase, fully used overcast conditions as league's break-out youngster Abhishek Sharma (2) got one that swung late, drawing him forward. The delivery eluded the outside edge of Abhishek's bat and clipped the off-bail. Soon after Abhishek Sharma's wicket, Starc dismissed the in-form Rahul Tripathi and SRH were reeling on 21/3 and could not recover from there.

Toss was the only thing that didn't go Kolkata's way on Sunday but Pat Cummins gave that advantage too to KKR by opting to bat first. The Knight Riders dictated terms from thereon and bowled out SRH for just 113, the lowest score in an IPL final.
The chase proved to be a cakewalk as KKR won by 8 wickets and 57 balls to spare. Venkatesh Iyer smashed a special half-century in the final to guide KKR home.
In the end, it wasn't just a one-sided final but a one-sided tournament which brought back the original KKR.

Gautam Gambhir and KKR. It's nothing less than a match made in heaven and it was on display throughout IPL 2024. The man who made KKR into a force to reckon with back in 2011, Kolkata's adopted son returned to the Knight's den ahead of this season and turned their fortunes around yet again.
KKR missed Gauti ever since the franchise parted ways with him after IPL 2017. The 2 titles KKR won in 2012 and in 2014 both came under Gambhir but the post-Gauti era produced no titles for the Knights.
The KKR management finally realised that they needed to bring the mastermind back and the return of Gambhir brought glory days back for the Knight Riders in his very first season as a mentor.
"Everyone in this group will be treated equally. There is no senior-junior, there is no domestic-international because we have got one mission that is to win this IPL. So everyone needs to follow that one simple path. On 26th May, we should be there, giving everything positive and it starts from today." These were the words by Gambhir to KKR players upon joining them as the mentor and the group responded gracefully.

India have enough experience and skills to deal with the Nassau County ground's "challenging" pitch, which has caused concern with its uneven bounce, said batting coach Vikram Rathour but he also conceded that toss becomes crucial in such conditions.
Skipper Rohit Sharma had to curb his attacking instincts in a high-quality 52 during India's eight-wicket thrashing of Ireland in their T20 World Cup opener here on Wednesday. Rohit was forced to retire hurt shortly after copping a blow to his right bicep off Josh Little.
Rishabh Pant was also hit on his left elbow during his 36 not-out, another indication that the pitch had uneven bounce with variable movement.
"(We are) trying to control the controllable. It was a challenging wicket and we were expecting a challenging wicket because we played a practice game here so we knew what to expect," Rathour said in the post-match press conference.
"We need to find a way to deal with it and we have enough skills in the team and enough experience in the team to deal with it. We should be fine," the former India opener said.
While conceding that winning the toss becomes vital in such conditions, he was not sure of a good first-innings total.
"The toss is crucial in conditions like these but fortunately, we won the toss so it was a great start, but you again can't control that. Even if we lose the toss and we have to bat first, we still need to find ways to deal with the situation and the pitch," he said.
"As many as we can get. I'm not going to put any number to that. We need to bat well and maximise whatever we can get. Whatever you can get," Rathour added.
The batters' plight on the pitch here, combined with a substandard outfield, has led to two low-scoring games.
After Sri Lanka was shot out for their lowest T20I score of 77, South Africa needed more than 16 overs to overhaul the target and also lost four wickets in the process.
The Irish batters, put into bat by India, also struggled against high-quality bowling to be shot out for a mere 96.
With India slated to play two more matches here including the blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday, Rathour expressed confidence in the team's batting group to find ways of getting runs.
"We have enough good batters who can manage to bat well on any kind of surface &mdash; that has been our strength for many, many years," he said.
At the same time, despite having spent the longest time among all batters on Wednesday, Rohit was not sure what to make of the pitch.
"...(I am) quite unsure of what to expect from the pitch," Rohit said at the presentation ceremony.
Rathour, however, mentioned that adaptability would be the key in such a scenario.
"We can adapt really well to different conditions and on this surface, you really need to adapt well and take it head-on and not worry about it too much," he said.

The track being used here was flown in from Adelaide.

India captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday revealed that he tried to convince outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid to stay on besides acknowledging his massive contribution to the team over the past two and a half years.
Dravid on Monday had made it clear that the T20 World Cup would be his last assignment with the Indian team. A day later, Rohit got emotional while talking about his first captain on the national side.
Gautam Gambhir is seen as Dravid's successor but it remains unclear if he has applied for the job.
"I tried convincing him to stay, but obviously there are a lot of things that he needs to look after as well. But yeah, I personally enjoyed my time with him.
"I'm sure the rest of the guys will say the same. It's been great working with him. And I'm not going to say anything actually. I'm not going to say anything," said an emotional Rohit when asked if the team has planned a farewell for him.
Rohit and Dravid go back a long way with the former having made his India debut under the player-turned-coach in June 2007.
"He was my first international captain when I made my debut in Ireland. Then I saw him play while I was just coming into the team (for) Test matches when he was captain. And such a big role model for all of us," said Rohit ahead of India's World Cup opener against Ireland on Wednesday.
"Growing up, we watched him play and we know what he has achieved, personally as a player and also what he's done for the team over the years. Battling out the team from difficult situations and that is what he's known for," he said referring to the 'Wall'.
India have not bee able to win a trophy in the Rohit-Dravid era yet but the head coach's contribution has been immense, said the skipper.
"He's shown a lot of great determination throughout his career and that is something that when he came here as a coach, I wanted to learn from him.
"It's been very fruitful. Other than the big silver (trophy), we won all the major tournaments and series. I've enjoyed every bit of it, working with him, and deciding what direction the team needs to head.
"And for him to buy into that thought, obviously makes a huge difference. And he was the first one who came and said, 'This is what we need to do as a team'. No matter what happens, but at least we'll give it a good shot at it when he arrives," added Rohit.
Dravid had taken charge of the team in November 2021.&nbsp;

Former India captain and Delhi Capitals director of cricket Sourav Ganguly is in favour of continuing with the impact-player rule in IPL, but wants teams to decide their picks at the toss.
The impact-player rule has become a hot topic of debate following the recently-concluded edition of IPL where scores in excess of 250 runs were notched up eight times.
Ganguly added he wants the boundaries to be pushed further back in upcoming IPL editions.
"I like the impact player rule. My only thing with IPL is that I just want the grounds to be a bit bigger. The fences should go a little behind," Ganguly told the media on the sidelines of the International Procurement and Supply Chain Conference organised by the Blue Ocean Corporation.
"It is a great tournament. The only thing you can do with the impact player is decide before the toss, so it's a bit of skill there.
"So, have the impact player revealed before because that will require a lot of skill and game plan. But, I am all for the impact player," the former India skipper said.
Ganguly defended Prithvi Shaw, who had a below-par IPL season this year, saying he is still young and learning the tricks of the shortest format.
"He (Prithvi Shaw) is a young kid. He is just 23. He is still learning how to play T20 cricket. He is a very fine talent and he will get better. Sometimes, we expect too much too early from everyone and I am sure Prithvi, with the skills he has, he will do well," he added.
Ganguly said wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had started playing like the cricketer he was before the car crash in 2022.
"He was superb for us (DC) in the IPL. I was so happy to see the way he came back, because I have always said that he is a special player," Ganguly said.
"Even earlier, I have said that he is exceptional. You don't want such talent to be lost for such disastrous reasons (accident). He has really worked hard to get back to where he is and he is the Rishabh Pant of old." Ganguly also hoped that the Bengal selectors will pick India wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha as he looks to return to his home state from Tripura.
"He wants to play for Bengal and rightfully so. He is a Bengal boy," Ganguly said.
"He went away to Tripura for two years because he was playing there as a professional. He has finished that and he wants to be in Bengal. I am sure the selectors will pick him for Bengal.
"I am not involved in Bengal cricket at the moment. I didn't fight for the presidency when I finished (my) BCCI (stint). I have just taken a break. Whatever the selectors and the officials decide, they will do," he added.

Ex-New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull has disclosed that he has been getting death threats due to his negative comments about India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman Virat Kohli.
Doull, as a game observer, was among several ex-players who had condemned Kohli's batting strike rate in the early stages of IPL 2024.
Doull regretted that many people overlook his positive remarks about Kohli, mentioning that he has received criticism before for criticizing the star batsman's tactics, particularly in T20 matches.
"He's too good to worry about what if he gets out. He's too good a player, and that was always my point around him. I said a thousand great things about Virat Kohli, but I say one thing that might be slightly negative or construed to be negative, I get death threats," Simon Doull said during a chat with Dinesh Karthik on Cricbuzz.
Doull also said that he has had good conversations with Kohli whenever the occasion came around. "It's never personal. We've had great conversations. I've interviewed him at tosses, we've talked after games, there's never been an issue. It's the same thing I said about Babar and talked to him after the game. He also told me that the coach had said the same to him," he added.
Karthik condemned the death threats against Doull, urging the Indian fans to find the difference between constructive criticism and someone taking personal jibes.

Australia is facing a shortage of players and might be forced to use support staff as substitute fielders in the warm-up games of next month's T20 World Cup due to the low turnaround time between the IPL and the global showpiece.
Australia are set to play two warm-up games against Namibia on Wednesday and the West Indies on Friday in Trinidad but they might have as few as eight players available for the two matches since most of them will take a break following their stint in the IPL playoffs.
"We're going to be undermanned. But it is a practice game. The guys who need to play will play as much as they can and we'll figure it out from there," captain Mitchell Marsh, who himself is not certain to play against Namibia as he is recovering from a hamstring injury, told cricket.com.au.
The IPL finals between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad concluded on Sunday night and three players -&ndash; Travis Head, Pat Cummins and player of the match Mitchell Starc &ndash;- were part of the two teams.
Besides the trio, Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell, who were part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, will only link up with the World Cup squad by the end of the week in Barbados, while Marcus Stoinis, who played for Lucknow Super Giants, is expected to arrive in Trinidad only after the Namibia practice match.
Travelling reserves Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short too are set to join after Australia's first match of the tournament proper which is against Oman on June 5.
"It's important to be flexible. Guys who have been at the IPL have been playing a lot of cricket. We prioritised giving them a couple of days at home to see their families, refresh, and play the long game for this tournament," Marsh said.
"We will get our 15 (all together) eventually, but really important that we give them a break, even if it's just a couple of days at home, that's really important." According to ICC rules, players taking to the field in the warm-up games must be from the country they are representing.
It means support staff like Andrew McDonald, Brad Hodge, George Bailey (all former international cricketers) and Andre Borovec (an ex-first grade wicketkeeper) might be required to run around in the field.
Marsh played just four IPL games for Delhi Capitals before flying out to Perth in April to consult CA's medical staff for his hamstring injury. He hasn't played since and is yet to resume bowling.
"I'm probably still a little while off (bowling) &ndash; I'll start bowling hopefully soon. Get through these practice games as a batter and then we'll ramp it up," said Marsh.
"We're lucky that we've got so many options with the ball and so much talent with Stoin, Greeny. I'll bowl when I need to bowl. I thought (this injury) was a three-weeker. Now it's been seven (weeks). With tendons, it's a little bit of feel.
"Once I was ruled out of the IPL, we certainly took our time. I'm exactly where I need to be with all the planning leading into the World Cup, I'll be ready to go."
